Giving Tuesday will be taking place on Tuesday 3 December 2019 and thousands of charities, schools and businesses are taking part. The campaign, which began in America in 2012 before being brought to the UK in 2014 by the Charities Aid Foundation, started as an antidote to the mass consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Now the campaign has spread across the world as a celebration of generosity, encouraging people to think of others through donating to charity or community groups, holding fundraising events, volunteering, or simply helping a friend, neighbour or family member.
If you’re a school, Giving Tuesday is a great day to fundraise for your organisation. We’ve seen many record-breaking giving days come out of Giving Tuesday campaigns and it’s a great opportunity to think about engaging your supporters in new and meaningful ways.
In 2018 our hashtag #givingtuesday was the top trending item on UK Twitter, reaching people more than 41 million times and in the UK more than £7.8 million was raised in online donations alone on the day itself.
We have lots of celebrity supporters including Binky Flestead, Cara Delevigne, Dua Lipa, Jack Whitehall and Steven Fry! Many household name brands such as Virgin, ASOS, PayPal and Sainsbury’s have signed up, you can see our amazing list of partners here. Charities big and small are involved, including leading name charities like Marie Curie and the Dogs Trust.
We think that it’s a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about charities, get involved in a cause they care about and work together to make a positive impact on the lives of others. That’s why we have put together this quick classroom activity for schools – the Word document below has all the instructions and the PDF has the templates that need to be printed off.
