#givingtuesday 2016 is on course to become the biggest yet with people, charities and businesses across the UK joining together to support good causes.
The global day of giving, now in its third year in the UK, has been the top trending item on Twitter since about 8am.
By 2pm the #givingtuesday hashtag had been used 30,000 times in the UK. The total potential global reach of #givingtuesday on Twitter by that point was 435 million.
More than 1,500 UK charities and businesses are backing the campaign, which is led in the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation. Organisations are encouraging staff, customers and the public to ‘do good stuff’ by giving money, time or their voice to a good cause today.
Highlights of the day so far have included:
A choir of MPs singing Christmas carols on College Green to raise money to support the work of doctors in Aleppo, as part of the Singing for Syrians appeal. MPs taking part included Victoria Prentis, Will Quince, Robert Buckland, Andrea Jenkyns and Eilidh Whiteford. Pictures are available on request.
Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown appearing in a video for Paypal, promoting its offer to add £1 to Cancer Research UK donations over £10 made using Paypal.
Staff at Marie Curie UK writing personalised thank you letters to their supporters.
Checkout staff at Morrisons wearing #givingtuesday stickers today and encouraging customers to top up their shop with a charitable donation.
eBay launching a pop up #givingtuesday shop to raise money for a number of good causes.
High profile figures supporting #givingtuesday on social media today so far have included entrepreneur Richard Branson, comedian Ricky Gervais, author JK Rowling, consumer journalist Martin Lewis, diver Tom Daley, choreographer Arlene Philips, comedian Sarah Milican, Towie star Samantha Faiers, actor Sir Tony Robinson and Minister for Civil Society Rob Wilson.

“This is the UK’s third #givingtuesday and looks set to be the biggest yet.
“Whether it’s giving money, volunteering time, promoting a favourite charity or doing something nice to put a smile on the face of a colleague, there’s a huge appetite to do good stuff.”
Other brands lending their support to #givingtuesday today include the Financial Times, Royal Mail, Sainsbury’s, Co-op, QVC, The Entertainer, Costa, Virgin Money Giving, and BT, which hosted a launch event at the BT Tower this morning.
