Two thirds of younger people say a day like Giving Tuesday would mean they would be likely to donate more.

Public polling carried out ahead of Giving Tuesday, the global day of generosity on 29th November, shows the value of a day like Giving Tuesday in encouraging people to give to charities. When asked about there being a recognised day when charities, businesses, and others come together to encourage people to give donations and inspire charitable actions, a third (35%) said such a recognised day would make them more likely to donate. The support is particularly strong among younger people – almost three quarters (73%) of those aged 18-34 said such a day was important, and more than six in ten (61%) said that it would mean they would be likely to donate more.

The Opinium Research commissioned by Giving Tuesday surveyed 2,000 nationally representative UK adults. The research was conducted between 4 and 8 November 2022.

The results of the poll also show strong support for the work charities do and their need to fundraise, with almost two thirds (63%) believing it’s important that people give what they can to support charities while there is a cost-of-living crisis, and half (50%) still likely to give to charities despite the economic difficulties.

Football fans are more likely to donate to a fundraising appeal from charity that’s close to their heart this festive period, with only around one in seven (15%) fans opting not to donate compared to a quarter (26%) of those who do not follow football. Additionally, football fans on average would give more (£48.50) compared to non-fans (£23.30).

Across the UK there were areas where people indicated that they would be more likely to continue giving to charities despite the cost of living crisis this festive period, with those in Sheffield (61%), Birmingham (56%) and London (54%) most likely to continue donating.

With thousands of charities and businesses ready to get involved in Giving Tuesday by fundraising and encouraging their employees and customers to take charitable actions on 29th November, the UK is set to see millions of pounds raised as part of this global campaign run in over 70 countries. Previous years has seen support from celebrities such as Stephen Fry and Joanna Lumley.

Stuart Andrew, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Civil Society, said:

“Charities are demonstrating great resilience at the moment and donations play a vital role in helping them carry out their important work.

Communities coming together in times of need make a genuine difference and I look forward to seeing the brilliant fundraising activities that are taking place this Giving Tuesday.”

Katie Docherty, CEO at the Chartered Institute of Fundraising said:

“Giving Tuesday is a unique day where together we can celebrate, fundraise, and donate to good causes and charities. Whether through COVID, or in the face of economic difficulty due to the cost of living, we consistently see people continuing to care about others and committed to supporting charities that are close to their heart. It’s really striking to see how much younger people see the value of businesses, charities, and others coming together to fundraise and I’m looking forward to seeing some fantastic fundraising campaigns and I’m sure lots of people giving what they can on 29th November.”

Michael Duncan, Head of Giving Strategy & Programmes at NatWest Group, said:

“Giving Tuesday is such an integral part of the charity work that NatWest Group does and we are excited to once again be involved at the forefront. Over the past two and a half years, the charity sector has faced unprecedented difficulties like so many people and businesses across the world. Giving Tuesday provides a great opportunity to say thank you for all the work charities have done during this very difficult period.

We, as a company, recognise the importance of charitable work and this Giving Tuesday we will be encouraging our customers and employees to support in any way they can on November 29th and beyond.”

Giving Tuesday is an excellent way for companies to give back to the communities in which they operate and use their products as a force for good.

In Kind Direct logo

To inspire some unique ways for companies to give back and support communities through the difficult winter ahead, we’re shining a light on In Kind Direct, a UK charity that offers a simple solution to product giving.

In Kind Direct is a charity that believes everyone deserves access to life’s essentials and that no usable product should go to waste. They redistribute consumer products donated by companies to thousands of charitable organisations – from charities to community centres, food projects and schools – across the UK.

In return for the product donation, they provide an Impact report to highlight the breath and human impact of the donations on local people in local communities.

Right now, more and more people are having to make the tough decision between heating, eating and keeping clean. By donating essential products, you can have an enormous impact on people who are struggling, improving confidence, self-esteem and mental wellbeing.

TOTM supporting In Kind Direct on Giving Tuesday

TOTM regularly support In Kind Direct through their customer ‘Gift a Pack of Pads’ scheme, but in 2021 on Giving Tuesday they launched an additional initiative where they matched an order at random every day throughout December and donated the equivalent in period pads to In Kind Direct. This giveback campaign provided additional support to period dignity projects throughout the Christmas season when demand for products is higher.
TOTM plan to launch the same initiative again this year on Giving Tuesday to increase their donations to support communities at this critical time. TOTM will also be using this time to share stories from the charities directly benefitting from these donations to encourage even more customer donations!

Ruby Palmer

“TOTM exists to drive positive change. We’re committed to supporting organisations and initiatives that share our desire to have a positive impact on the world. We’re proud to partner with In Kind Direct as part of our vision to improve access to period products for those who need them most. In Kind Direct’s team are a pleasure to work with. They make it easy to reach period dignity projects across the UK and provide us with ongoing feedback of the real impact that TOTM donations are making.”

Are you planning a fundraising campaign or appeal this Giving Tuesday? Whether your aim is to ask people to donate money or goods, charitable institutions and those fundraising on their behalf must make sure their fundraising is in line with the standards set by the UK-wide Code of Fundraising Practice.

The code is set and maintained by the Fundraising Regulator – the independent regulator of charitable fundraising in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulator has shared these tips to help you get to know the code, and how you can make sure your fundraising is legal, open, honest and respectful.

Find out if the code applies to you

Why is it important to know about the code? Charities that fundraise are expected to do so in a way which encourages public trust and confidence, in line with the law and recognised standards. The code applies if fundraising is conducted by or on behalf of a charitable organisation (such as registered charities, exempt charities and some community interest companies) and the fundraising is in the UK. Your governing body (board of trustees) is ultimately responsible for compliance.

If you are not fundraising on behalf of a charity, you can still use the code and accompanying guidance to make sure your activity is in line with best practice.

Familiarise yourself with the standards

The code is freely available online. It is split into three parts to make it easy to find what is relevant to your fundraising activity. The parts relate to:

1. ‘all fundraising’ – which trustees, staff and volunteers should be aware of
2. ‘working with others’ – essential when working with volunteers, children or other third parties; and
3. ‘specific fundraising methods’ – which summarise what you need to consider for activities like communications, digital fundraising or events.

All of the standards are informed by four key values: legal, open, honest and respectful. You should always bear these in mind when fundraising.

Dive deeper by accessing guidance and support

The Fundraising Regulator has a host of guidance for trustees, fundraising staff and volunteers including free training videos. It also has advice for people and businesses wanting to donate or fundraise, including tips on giving safely to charity and how to set up a fundraising appeal.

Within the code there are also links to further guidance from organisations like the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, Charity Commissions for England and Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).

Double-check your fundraising campaigns

Once you’re clued up on the code, do double check your Giving Tuesday online fundraising pages, website, forms and processes are all aligned with best practice. If anything seems amiss, do seek professional advice as charities are responsible for making sure that they meet any legal requirements.

Remember, the code doesn’t just apply on Giving Tuesday, but to fundraising all year round. So, keep those values legal, open, honest and respectful in mind for your future activity as well.

Got questions we haven’t covered? You can contact the Fundraising Regulator’s free advice service to ask any questions you might have about the code and fundraising regulation.

The global day of generosity is fast-approaching, and before you know it, the big day will be upon us. Doesn’t the time fly when you’re preparing for the world’s biggest giving event?

If you’re looking for some last minute tips, whether to improve your ongoing campaign or pull together some quick content and join in the fundraising festivities, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few things you can do in the final stretch towards Giving Tuesday 2022.

Check out campaigns from previous years

Giving Tuesday has been taking place in the UK since 2014, following growing interest in the phenomenal success of the original movement across the Atlantic. Over the years, a multitude of charities and other organisations have taken the Giving Tuesday message and turned it into an opportunity to raise money, awareness and more for their causes. This means that the inspiration for your very own campaign is already out there, waiting to inform your next (or first) move.

Have a look at these stories of Giving Tuesday, which covers some of the wonderful campaigns that took place over recent years. From larger charities to small, there’s something for everyone to do, and looking into what has worked well for others in the past could create some last-minute actions that translate into real-world change.

Create some catchy content

Capturing people’s attention is a real challenge in the digital age – with so many people trying to retain the attention of their audience and draw people in, it can be a real challenge, for smaller charities especially. It’s worthwhile to think about what messages you want to put out there, and how this might reach your audience and positively influence them to get involved.

Write down some catchy slogans, hashtags etc, and consult your team – find that perfect message that people can immediately connect with, and tells them exactly what you are asking of them, whether that be volunteering their time, donating money and everything in between. If you’re drawing a blank, check out our Partner Toolkit for some template messages that you can tweak to fit your brand and campaign.

Or, adapt your existing content

Want to get involved but strapped for time? If you don’t have capacity to create brand new content, take a look at what content you have planned around Giving Tuesday and see if you can work it into your message.

For example, if you’re launching a festive campaign, or are targeting your messages towards a certain demographic, this could be the perfect opportunity to quickly and easily spread the Giving Tuesday word and achieve your goals at the same time. Then, your supporters will know exactly what, and why, you are asking for their generosity on Giving Tuesday.
