In the run up to Giving Tuesday 2022 we wanted to highlight a way in which charitable organisations can help their limited funds to go further in supporting their local communities, during these difficult times.

In Kind Direct is a charity that believes everyone deserves access to life’s essentials and that no usable product should go to waste. That’s why they redistribute consumer products donated by companies to thousands of charitable organisations – from charities to community centres, food projects and schools – across the UK.

Whether you need toilet roll or toys, In Kind Direct can help save organisations money on essential items, so more funds can be focused on support and services.

They’re currently running their Powered by Kind campaign, to urge more charitable organisations to join their network, and to encourage more companies to donate products to support them.

Organisations like Chance Changing Lives which was the first community pantry to open in Cheshire back in October 2018. It provides access to food and household items once a week for 150 families as well as offering other support services, such as counselling and debt advice.

They now rely on In Kind Direct for essentials such as toilet roll, washing up liquid, laundry items, disinfectant, shampoo, body wash, nappies, baby wipes and tea bags for its members.

As the cost-of-living crisis escalates, In Kind Direct’s work is more important than ever. You can sign up today for free to access products to give to people in your community this Giving Tuesday.

As the countdown to Giving Tuesday on 29 November gets closer, we are thrilled to see what organisations are up to in the lead up to the big day. With so many other things going on in the world right now, and what probably feels like little time to go, we wanted to share some easy and quick tips which will mean every charity can be part of it. If you haven’t started your campaign yet or worry that you can’t make the most of the remaining month, don’t panic! No matter what stage you are at, here are a few things you can do to get your message out there and make this a Giving Tuesday to remember.

If you haven’t started your campaign yet…

Get all the tips and advice straight to your inbox by signing up to be a Giving Tuesday partner

It’s very simple to become a Giving Tuesday Partner, enabling you to join the likes of big charities such as Oxfam and Shelter, and smaller charities like Mae Murray Foundation and BulliesOut. Giving Tuesday is the biggest celebration of charitable giving across the UK (and the world!), and the voice of every single charity is important! As well as helping to amplify and broaden the reach of your campaigning, partnering with us gives you exclusive access to many helpful resources and information. These include email updates with everything you need to know about Giving Tuesday going forward, in addition to downloadable digital assets, from logos to Instagram stickers.

Find inspirational ideas for your campaigns

There are countless examples out there of ground-breaking campaigns, and not just largescale ones – many smaller charities with limited time and capacity have really pulled it out of the bag, and you can too! If you’re unsure where to start, this wonderful blog shares 16 inspiring campaign ideas, from e-cards to volunteer pledge drives. Whatever asks you want to make to best suit your organisational aims, this piece has something for everyone. One of the many great examples we’d like to highlight is the campaign work of Tiny Tickers – for every £10 donated by supporters, a family is provided with a support pack and an extra special hug button, reminding them that they aren’t alone. Thanks to their success on Giving Tuesday, they were able to send packs to over 600 families!

Decide on a simple campaign

Do you want to encourage people to volunteer their time? Are you looking to thank those for the work they do and how proud you are of them? Giving Tuesday can be used in any way that works for you and your charity – so tailor the campaign as you see fit. For example, you could use it to launch your winter campaign, or to send thank you notes to supporters.

Try something different

82% of organisations use Giving Tuesday to try something new and different. Hooking onto a global day of giving means you can step outside the box of your normal fundraising and social activity – you could try a more informal, jokey language, target a different demographic. Feel free to be playful with your communications!

Create a bespoke fundraising page

Using fundraising pages is a great way to link your Giving Tuesday communications to a simple way for people to give donations to you. Many fundraising platforms allow you to embed your own branding, customise how it looks, and ensure that your audience have a positive user experience. JustGiving, the Giving Partner in the UK for this year’s Giving Tuesday, have launched an exclusive donations portal that enables anyone, anywhere to support the movement. Importantly, all donations made through the portal will have 0% fees with 100% of every donation going to your cause! Find out more about it by watching the webinar recording here.

Giving Tuesday is the perfect opportunity for charities to use sales fundraising to engage new and existing business supporters, writes Jules Smee from Work for Good

Here are three tips to help fundraisers encourage sales fundraising this Giving Tuesday.

1. Utilise your current supporter base.

If you consider that 99.9% of the business population is made up of SMEs and 16.3 million people work for an SME, it is likely that some of your supporters also own or work for an SME. Optimise the influence of Giving Tuesday as a way to inspire your supporters to use their business to raise funds for your charity by donating a portion of their sales to your charity,. For example: donating 10% of a product or service.

Sales fundraising or cause-related marketing as it is sometimes known, is a sustainable way of fundraising, as businesses are only committed to donating what they have raised in relation to what they have sold. Not only will they be able to raise funds in a way that works for them but they have the chance to benefit from the global reach of Giving Tuesday, to amplify their businesses charitable giving and raise vital brand awareness for your cause.

2. Slot sales fundraising into your communication channels.

Use your newsletter and emails to tell your supporters about sales fundraising as a way businesses can maximise the wonderful opportunities Giving Tuesday presents. Keep the messaging simple.

Add sales fundraising as an option on your ‘Ways To Fundraise’ webpage . Illustrate to supporters that sales fundraising is an easy and sustainable way for their business to donate no matter the size of their gift. Here is an example of how Cool Earth has done this or use our templates to help you.

3. Encourage businesses to use Giving Tuesday to make an impact.

It is great for businesses to tell their customers that they are fundraising for charity and this can be even more impactful when they get to join in with the global day of giving. Encourage them to use the #GivingTuesday hashtag and ask them to tell their community about their favourite charities and causes. When they do publicise their giving on social media, make sure your team knows to stay engaged and share their social media posts to spread that awareness even wider!

There are so many other reasons why businesses should get involved with Giving Tuesday and so many ways they can maximise the opportunity. Check out this blog post and share with your supporters to educate businesses about the benefits of Giving Tuesday and sales fundraising.

Since 2020, ethical children’s skin-care brand Rowdy Kind has used Giving Tuesday to raise money for mental health charity YoungMinds by donating 10% of sales of a range of Christmas products. Last year, they launched their sales fundraising in mid-October, and used Giving Tuesday to amplify the campaign and raise vital funds.

Streamline the process:

In order to encourage businesses to support your charity by raising funds through their sales, it’s important to ensure that it is quick and easy. Offering a streamlined process and a simple digital solution to the legal agreement needed for sales fundraising, called a Commercial Participation Agreement (CPA), is smart way to do this.

That’s where Work for Good can help. Our digital CPA solution has allowed charities including Mind and the DEC to accept donations of any size from businesses and ensures their business supporters can create the right agreement to be able to proudly and legally start their sales fundraising and publicise their amazing support.

If your charity has a Work for Good page make sure it is updated with your Giving Tuesday campaign.
